How can this university prostitute itself with this dictator here!”

After a loud whistle and a cry of “How can this university prostitute itself with this dictator here?” a young man interrupted a speech by China’s prime minister, Wen Jiabao, at Cambridge University and hurled a shoe at him, as he stood behind a podium on a stage. In the Associated Press video of the event, above, after about 27 seconds, the shoe can be heard, not seen, landing with a thud off screen to Mr. Wen’s right.
The unidentified protester was not nearly as accurate as the man who perhaps inspired him, Muntader al-Zaidi who tossed two oxfords very close to the head of then-President George W. Bush in a similar incident in Baghdad six weeks ago.
The Times of London reported that “the man, who had a pronounced German accent,” also shouted “How can you listen to these lies?” before hurling what The Times correctly identified as “a heavy grey trainer,” and said that it missed Mr. Wen “by a few feet.”
As can also be heard in the video, the crowd listening to Mr. Wen’s address on the global economy, seemed to round on the protester:
The man was bundled away, still shouting. The audience, mostly composed of Chinese students studying at Cambridge, shouted “Get out! Get Out!” as he was removed.
Mr Wen, who seemed unruffled, paused for a moment and then said, in Chinese: “This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK.”
